ENS developer Nick Johnson has called on blockchain domains company Unstoppable Domains to drop a recently granted patent or face legal action. Johnson claims that the patent, which uses blockchain technology to determine domains, is based entirely on innovations developed by ENS. He argues that the patent contains no novel innovations of its own. Johnson has been unsuccessful in his attempts to contact Unstoppable Domains about the issue. Unstoppable Domains has pledged its first patent to the Web3 Domain Alliance, but Johnson is requesting an unconditional and irrevocable patent pledge. He warns that ENS is ready to challenge the patent, as it believes it is entirely derivative of its own inventions. Unstoppable Domains has not yet responded to the request. The thread on X (formerly Twitter) has attracted attention from the crypto community, with concerns raised about the requirement for organizations to join the Web3 Domain Alliance for rights over the technology.
